Sue Matthews

Public Health Consultant, London Borough of Redbridge

Health inequalities has always been a passion for me. I started my career supporting people with serious mental illness to increase their independence where I saw first hand the importance of communities in supporting people to thrive. I have worked across a range of strategic, commissioning, front line, governance and change management roles in local government, NHS, and voluntary sector.
I have worked in Redbridge Council since 2021, as a Public Health Consultant, leading on 0-25 children and young people programme including 0-19 Healthy Child Programme, public mental health and suicide prevention, substance misuse, smoking and tobacco control and CVD prevention.
I have an ongoing commitment to ensuring that we develop and deliver services that meet the needs and work alongside the assets within our local communities and creating intentionally inclusive systems to reduce ethnic disparities in health and healthcare. Professor George J. Sefa Dei said “inclusion is not bringing people into what already exists: it is making a new space, a better space for everyone.” This requires a very different way of working and a significant change in our approach and I am very excited to be part of the work we are doing in Redbridge to work differently and deliver lasting improvements to our residents health and wellbeing.
