Dr Ed Piper

Director of Medical and Scientific Affairs, AstraZeneca UK

Dr Ed Piper (BSc, MBBS, MRCGP, MFPM) is Director of Medical and Scientific Affairs at AstraZeneca. He trained in Medicine at United Medical and Dental Schools of Guys and St Thomas’, University of London, after which he spent seven years in NHS practice, latterly as a GP Partner in Sevenoaks, Kent. In 2001 he moved into the pharmaceutical industry and has worked for Aventis, Takeda and AstraZeneca.

During his career as a pharmaceutical physician, he has worked across all stages of drug development (phase I-IV) and commercialisation. He has a particular interest in Respiratory Medicine having developed novel biologics for patients with severe asthma as well as inhaled combination treatments that are used across all severities of asthma.

He is currently responsible for AstraZeneca UK medical strategy across cardio-renal, respiratory, immunology and vaccines therapy areas. He leads a team of over 100 employees in various disciplines including medical affairs, real world evidence, regulatory and population health. He is a passionate advocate for effective collaboration between NHS, academia and the pharmaceutical industry as a means to improve patient outcomes and reduce heath inequalities.
