Professor Stella Vig

National Medical Director for Secondary Care, NHS England

Stella Vig is the National Medical Director for Secondary Care and the National Clinical Director for Elective Care at NHS England. With over 30 years of experience in the NHS, she was appointed as a Consultant in vascular and general surgery at Croydon University Hospital in 2006.

Stella Vig's career is marked by her dedication to improving patient outcomes and transforming secondary care services across the NHS in England. She has played a pivotal role in maintaining high-quality, timely, and integrated care for patients, especially during the pandemic. Her operational role at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust opened a ‘hospital within a hospital’ to safely continue and recover planned care and surgery through and after the pandemic. Stella works closely with the ‘Get It Right First Time’ best practice programmes.

Her leadership extends to clinical education and service transformation, including chairing the JSCT core surgery advisory committee to the four Royal Colleges and the London Diabetic Foot Network. She was elected to the Royal College of Surgeons of England Council and has served two terms.
