Professor Rick Steeds

Professor / Consultant Cardiologist, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham

I am a Consultant Cardiologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in in Birmingham, United Kingdom, where I was appointed to develop and lead cardiovascular imaging (echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging) over 20 years ago. As a result of my imaging experience and improvements in diagnostic techniques, I was increasingly asked to care for people with complicated and rare diseases. As a result, I have specialised for over 15 years in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of metabolic and infiltrative cardiomyopathy, including patients with Fabry, Amyloid and Carcinoid heart disease at the Rare Disease centre in Birmingham. For all my career, my clinical work has been complemented by my involvement in research, to improve access to care, diagnosis and delivery of effective therapy to those who need it most. I am an Honorary Professor and Clinical Lead of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Birmingham and have published more than 200 peer-reviewed research articles. More recently, this has expanded into projects improving early diagnosis of Fabry disease, through better family screening, digital projects screening big data, and increasing detection in those less well off in our Society.
