Katherine South

Hydration Project Coordinator and Dietetic Assistant Practitioner, The Rotherham NHS Foundation trust

Katherine has worked for the NHS for 10 years, after a change in career as a Secured Financial Underwriter. She is now an established member of the Dietetic family and has worked in the community and acute dietetic teams, providing nutritional support to malnourished patients.
For the past 2 years, Katherine has focused on the national NHSE hydration pilot. Her experience and passion for nutrition, hydration and dementia care has driven her work.
With a collaborative, deliberately non-hierarchical approach, Katherine has been given the freedom and support to develop, expand and coordinate the highly effective hydration project. Using her training in teaching and adult education and project management, she has delivered hydration training sessions to over 1800 HCP’s, managers, care home & domiciliary care staff, resulting in impressive improvements and outcomes.
In 2024, her successful submission led to the hydration team winning a HSJ award. She was also nominated, and her hard work recognised personally winning a CAHPO award, being described as “the driving force behind the improvements”.
Katherine is now working across South Yorkshire to establish and nurture local project groups, to replicate and successfully deliver the care home hydration model. With Katherine’s support, other areas nationally have also replicated the hydration project, with fantastic results.
