James joined KPMG having spent 25 years working in the NHS. During his career, James has worked at Board level both as a Chief People Officer, and a hospital Chief Executive. During his career, James has worked in complex and challenged healthcare organisations to deliver service improvement. He has extensive experience of designing and implementing improvement strategies, leading change management processes and leading and supporting the delivery of organisational programmes of efficiency such as cost improvement, and workforce utilisation. James has led on multi-million pound improvement programmes, focused on addressing long standing financial deficit, workforce shortages and transformation. Other areas of successful delivery have been in quality of care delivery, engagement & culture and patient pathway redesign.
James has led the national acute network at NHS Confederation, which included the provider Chief Executive advisory group, and also the HR network for the Association of UK university teaching hospitals (AUKUH). In 2015 and 2018 respectively, James’ leadership was recognised by both the HPMA and CIPD with his workforce improvement strategies being awarded best improvement in the capability of a HR team (Great Ormond Street Hospital) and HR team of the year (Medway NHS Foundation Trust). He was also the Healthcare People Management Association 2019 HR Director of the year.
