Chris Davies

Parent of two young men with learning disabilities and autism, Bristol

Chris has two sons – both young adults with learning difficulties and autism. He is part of a parent carer group of five families who have children with autism, complex learning and social needs and sensory difficulties. Young people now in their early twenties, who have grown up together. All are currently in or have recently moved out of year-round care and education in independent non-maintained specialist education residential colleges funded by education and adult social care. Our children have received lifelong love and care from parents, siblings, family members, specialist education professionals and care workers. The cliff edge of finding suitable accommodation and care for our children when they leave college is a terrifying prospect. Creating a forever home that is suited to our children’s collective and individual needs is paramount for us and increasingly urgent. We are not alone with our circumstances, hopes, needs and plans. We understand we can’t work in isolation to realise the care we know our children deserve. We want to work with our local authority, government and other agencies to create a realistic and sustainable means of delivering viable lifetime homes and caring communities for vulnerable adults – and a template for others to do the same.
