Dr Chris Bentley
Professor Chris Bentley FRCP; FFPH
Having qualified and practiced Medicine in London, Chris took up contracts in Somalia with Save the Children Fund and then UNICEF in refugee and village-based health care, and as primary care adviser to the Somali Government. Back in the UK, having retrained in Public Health he then worked as Director of Public Health in West Sussex, Sheffield and South Yorkshire SHA over 15 years. From 2006 he headed up the Health Inequalities National Support Team (HINST), which worked with the 70 most deprived areas of England with the poorest health (Spearhead areas), and based on this work provided ongoing policy advice to DH on population health issues. Since 2011 he has worked independently, having contracts with local systems across England and Wales and at regional and national level (including Public Health England and NHS England) and through WHO in Europe. The focus of his contracts is on addressing inequalities in health and wellbeing; prevention and the burden of disease, and recently on practical focus on these issues across the Covid pandemic, and through Systems, Place Based Working and connecting into and with communities.
Chris has been Non-Executive with Community Health and Care Trusts for 10 years.
