Commercial Medicines Director, NHS England and NHS Improvement

As the chief negotiator with the pharmaceutical industry for the NHS in England, Blake has developed the health service’s commercial capabilities to work with system partners to enable faster patient access to innovative treatments. Overseeing the NHS Commercial Medicines Directorate, Blake’s teams cover a broad remit that includes national procurement and supply of hospital medicines, the Cancer Drugs Fund and Innovative Medicines Fund, and NHS medicines policy, strategy & analysis functions.

Since joining the NHS in October 2018, Blake’s has led successful negotiations to secure a number of high-profile commercial deals for cutting-edge new medicines. Alongside deals for new and advanced therapies, the NHS has also negotiated clinically led agreements that have secured exceptional value for taxpayers from the NHS medicines budget, including the largest ever financial saving for the NHS from a single drug procurement.

Before moving into the NHS, Blake held senior roles in the pharmaceutical industry for nearly 25 years at Sanofi. During this time, he ran innovative pharmaceutical and generic businesses in the UK for 15 years. Blake went on to become Commercial Operations Head for Sanofi’s global generics company and managed Sanofi branded businesses across multiple European countries.
