Top picks interview series: ICB Network
Ahead of NHS ConfedExpo 2026, we spoke with Helen Wolstenholme, Assistant Director of the ICB Network, to find out what she’s looking forward to and why colleagues working in integrated care shouldn’t miss this year’s conference.
What are you looking forward to most at NHS ConfedExpo 2026?
I really enjoy coming to NHS ConfedExpo to meet ICB members and partner organisations who we work closely with all year round, but rarely get the chance to see them face-to-face.
Why should people working in integrated care attend NHS ConfedExpo 2026?
NHS ConfedExpo offers ICB leaders a rare opportunity to connect during a time of tremendous change and challenge, as they move into the role of strategic commissioners. It also provides an opportunity to hear about genuinely innovative activity happening up and down the country.
Looking at the programme, what are you most looking forward to and why?
I always enjoy being on the NHS Alliance stand as it’s a great way to meet members from across the NHS. I’m also looking forward to our private ICB Network members’ dinner, which offers a more relaxed setting to connect with colleagues.
Are there any other sessions you are looking forward to attending?
A health system fit for the future: turning reform and legislation into local impact
This session offers valuable insight into how national reform and legislation can be translated into meaningful local impact and service transformation.
Decommissioning and the challenge of change
This session explores the complexities of service change, focusing on leadership, engagement and how to successfully communicate with the public.
Public service reform: getting better value by working together at place
This session highlights the importance of place-based working and how integrated approaches across public services can improve outcomes and deliver better value.
I’ve chosen these sessions because they represent some of the most challenging shifts ahead, but also where there is significant opportunity for progress. With my background in place, local government and VCSE, I’m particularly interested in how policy translates into practice on the ground.
Are there any speakers you are looking forward to hearing from?
I’m always struck by the calibre of speakers, and this year I’m particularly looking forward to hearing from our new CEO Ciaran Devane, our Chair Victor Adebowale, and our ICB members, many of whom are speaking or chairing sessions.
What advice would you give someone who is attending NHS ConfedExpo for the first time?
Wear comfortable shoes and pace yourself - there is a lot to take in, a lot to learn and a lot of people to connect with.
What are you hoping to take away from the conference?
This will be my final NHS ConfedExpo with the NHS Alliance, as I’m moving on in mid-June. I’m looking forward to saying goodbye, making new connections, and ending my time at the Alliance on a high note.
