Everyone wants safe, high-quality healthcare. But too often, innovation and improvement efforts in the NHS and beyond are carried out
without the backing of reliable, robust evidence. That’s the gap THIS Institute
(The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute) at the University of Cambridge exists
to fill.
We generate practical, high‑quality evidence about how to improve healthcare – what works, what doesn’t, and why. Our research focuses on the everyday realities of NHS care, ensuring it is relevant, usable, and grounded in the challenges people face across the system.
We believe lived experience is a vital form of evidence. By combining the firsthand insight of patients and staff with rigorous scientific research, we generate findings that are both credible and workable.
As an independent institute, we bring together patients, healthcare staff, policymakers, and others to tackle challenges from every
angle: understanding the problem, developing shared goals, co‑designing solutions, and evaluating the impact. This collaborative, participatory approach ensures the evidence we produce is actionable, trustworthy, and
capable of underpinning meaningful innovation and improvement.
