Transforming urgent and emergency care: insights from AI-powered prevention
This session will explore AI for urgent emergency care, a pioneering NHS England collaboration between UCLPartners, NHS North East London Integrated Care System, and Health Navigator that leverages AI to identify individuals at risk of health deterioration and offers them personalised, nurse-led clinical coaching to prevent crises before they occur.
At the forefront of the treatment to prevention agenda, the intervention builds on evidence from the largest randomised controlled trial on AI-assisted preventative care. Piloted in Staffordshire, it reduced emergency attendances by 34 per cent, bed days by 25 per cent, and GP referrals by 26 per cent and mortality reductions, including a 46 per cent drop among men over 75.
The programme is now being scaled across north-east London targeting reduced admissions, bed days, A&E attendances and increased health equity.
This session will share early insights from deploying this model, with perspectives from patients, staff and systems. We’ll also address challenges, barriers and strategies for tackling health inequalities, inviting discussion on the benefits and risks of scaling AI-driven prevention. The session will also include views from the wider healthcare landscape on urgent and emergency care interventions and practices.
