Making prevention everybody's business: community-led prevention
The government and ICS leaders agree that a shift to prevention is essential in helping people live longer, healthier lives and in ensuring the performance and sustainability of the healthcare system. Most ICSs have prioritised prevention at a strategic level but must increasingly direct attention towards the most effective interventions at neighbourhood and place level, and how evidence can be used to re-allocate resource from the acute sector to support people closer to home in primary and community care.
Accounting for around 10-20 per cent of a person's health, the NHS does not have all the levers to improve health, with the rest impacted by socioeconomic factors such as poverty, inequalities, obesity, smoking, excessive drinking, and poor levels of physical activity. These socioeconomic challenges cause largely preventable health issues and make up a huge proportion of the demand on the service, more than we have ever seen before.
The session will hear from leaders at national, system, place and neighbourhood levels on work around community-led prevention for improving the health of vulnerable individuals and marginalised communities.
