Better care, less waste: designing greener pathways

11 Jun 2025
Charter 7
Mobilising change / improvement , Net zero and sustainability

This session is aimed at clinicians and managers to support the development of environmentally sustainable patient pathways. It will include examples of work being undertaken nationally to reduce the environmental impact of patient pathways, to support the NHS in reaching its net zero commitment.

With guidance from GIRFT and the Greener NHS team, the session offers:

• practical steps to reduce the environmental impact of healthcare pathways and identifying decarbonisation opportunities
• a focus on the ELLA (environmental lessons learned and applied) methodology, developed by GIRFT in partnership with the Greener NHS and other stakeholders
• an opportunity for questions and to share initiatives on greener pathways with like-minded colleagues.

Approaches include streamlining pathways with one-stop clinics and day-case surgery, identifying lower-carbon treatment alternatives, and developing green ‘action sets’ for common procedures.
